List of materials: 3 or 4 X long hook size 6 thru 12: Tan, brown, black, Kevlar or 3/0 pre-waxed thread; 6/8 fibers from red Hackle feather; yellow foam body; long brown hackle feather; two approx. 1/4 inch section turkey quill feather; Br. hackle feather for head.
Tying:
[1] wind rear 3/4 of the hook shank with thread and tie on red tail, and tie on brown hackle feather:
[2] Cut thin yellow foam strip about 5/16th" wide and 1inch long and cut slit in middle so that when slid under hook and back it will cover 3/4ths of hook shank, leaving a tail that can be trimmed to length later. Cover hook shank with clear fingernail polish to keep body from turning and spiral thread forward making even segments in the body as shown, with about 3 wraps of thread in each segment, crossing over segments on top of body.
[3] Spiral brown hackle forward with a wrap and half between each segment and tie off at front of body:
[4] Tie 2 quill segments, from opposite sides of feather, so tips are about 1/2 the length of hook shank behind bend:
[5] Tie in other brown hackle at front of base of wings and palmer forward, leaving enough space for head, Make head of fly and whip finish:
[6] Trim tail to length and you have the finished fly:
Optional method, with flared deer head. Thanks Art, Good fishing.
